Dance Teacher Magazine: Get excited for more dance-themed television!

Get excited for more dance-themed television!

by Courtney Rae Allen

Make room to add yet another primetime program to your weekly TiVo roster, because NBC will debut its new Olympic-style dance series, Superstar Dancers of the World (working title), early next year.

The show will feature professional dancers from eight countries—Argentina, Australia, China, India, Ireland, Russia, South Africa and the United States—performing pieces stylistically unique to their culture. Think of it as an international dance competition through which viewers will witness firsthand how dance has evolved around the globe!

Each country’s team will present two solos, a duet and a group performance to be scored by judges from the participating countries to become the Dance Masters of the World (second working title). And who will be the host? Why, Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley, of course. Flatley was also recently a guest judge on Dancing With the Stars.

NBC teamed up with Nigel Lythgoe, the mastermind behind American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance?, and his longtime production partner, Simon Fuller, to produce the new show. Busy with taking SYTYCD global, Lythgoe was initially skeptical about launching another dance series. But once Fuller threw him the Olympics hook, he was convinced.

“It’s the ‘Olympic Games of Dance’,” Lythgoe said in a Hollywood Reporter article. “Dancing has taken off in this country, the Olympics took off in this country; here we’re bringing them both together. It’s not just celebrities and their partners trying to dance or young people attempting to be great dancers. These are the great dancers.”

So stay tuned for what’s poised to be one of the hottest spectacles of dance on TV!
